alias grace episode 2 recap

The apple peel game Grace and Mary played came true for Mary: she was unable to peel her apple in one piece, and she never married. It lands in the shape of a J, and Mary says Grace will marry Jeremiah, the peddler who's coming tomorrow.

But I will not be anybody's plum. At night, Mary asks Grace to tell her a story. She thought he wasn't like other men, but now he won't even speak to her.

Mrs. Humphrey awakens him. He asks if she always felt that, or if she felt it more so after the murders. Men and their need to control women make up this many-headed monster. Saving Mary's reputation, however, does nothing to avenge her death. Mary says he promised to marry her. He asks her if she's had any dreams. They get back into bed and Grace puts her arms around Mary. She tells Grace she must go back to work or Mary will be found out.

In a voiceover, Grace says the doctor wants knowledge from her, knowledge gained from a descent into the pit. She does the least she can do for Mary's reputation by telling the girls they'll say she died of a fever. He says, "You are one of us," and touches the side of his nose.

The next day Jeremiah arrives, with children singing and banging pots. Mary refuses to tell Grace who the father of her baby is, although the show throws many hints towards George Parkinson. At the end, she moans in pain. Grace laments to Dr. Jordan that she knew Mary wouldn't be pleased with the lies they planned to tell about her.

Mary does an impression of Mrs. Parkinson as they follow her around the house. The second part of Alias Grace is even darker and more ominous the first as we see the fate of Grace… It somehow both honors her autonomy and the validity of her memory while also suggesting there’s no way to know what the truth is. Grace could have been possessed—whether in a supernatural sense by the spirit of Mary Whitney or in a more medical sense by a split personality disorder. Mary and Grace are doing the washing. We expect Jeremiah/Jerome’s hypnosis procedure to unlock Grace’s elusive memories, but the ultimate result is much more layered than that. They'll say anything to get what they want out of you, then think better of it and be off on the next boat.

You will cross water three times. She perfected it by listening to a recording of Rebecca Liddiard (who plays Mary Whitney) reciting the lines herself and then mimicked her voice. You are one of us. Grace grabs her and the two fall with a thud.

Mary says that won't work because she'll start to show soon. As Grace peels, Mary tells her about the life she envisions for herself.

Grace asks why, and Mary explains men are liars by nature.
